The word "woodlouse" conjures images of tiny, segmented creatures scuttling across damp earth. But did you know these seemingly simple beings aren't insects at all? They belong to the crustacean family—making them distant relatives of crabs, lobsters, and shrimp! This explains their hard, shell-like exoskeletons.

Woodlice thrive in moist environments, preferring the shadowy world beneath rocks, logs, fallen leaves, and even decaying wood, which helped give them their name.
