The term "winemaker" refers to the person responsible for making wine. The job often combines science, skill, experience, and personal judgment. A winemaker may be involved from the growing season through bottling, although the exact role depends on the size and structure of the winery. In some places, the winemaker works closely with vineyard staff, helping make decisions about harvest time and fruit quality, even if they are not the person managing the vineyard itself.

After the grapes are picked, the winemaker may oversee crushing, fermentation, aging, blending, and bottling. They monitor sugar, acidity, flavor, and aroma, and they make choices that affect the style of the final wine. Some focus on small, careful production, while others lead large teams at major wineries. The role can include both practical work and planning, depending on the setting.

The word is sometimes used interchangeably with "vintner," but the meanings are not always exactly the same. Traditionally, a vintner could be the owner, seller, or producer of wine, while a winemaker is specifically the person who makes it. In everyday use, however, one person may do all of these things. Whether in a small family winery or a large commercial operation, a winemaker plays a central role in turning grapes into wine.
