windbreaker

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /wˈɪndbreɪkə/

US

  • /wˈɪndbreɪkər/

Description

Imagine standing on a windy beach, with the air pushing against you and making you feel cold. A windbreaker is like a light shield against that wind. It is a lightweight jacket, often a little water-resistant, made to stop the wind from getting through too easily and to keep you more comfortable outside. People often wear one for walks, travel, sports, or any day when the weather changes quickly.

Think of it as the lighter cousin of a winter coat, good for layering or for wearing on its own when it is cool but not very cold. A bright red windbreaker flapping in the breeze is a familiar sight.
