whitefly

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /wˈaɪtflaɪ/

US

  • /wˈaɪtflaɪ/

Description

Imagine a tiny white insect, almost like a little moth, fluttering around your garden plants. It may be a whitefly. These small insects are common pests that feed on plant sap, weakening the plant and sometimes spreading plant diseases. They are especially troublesome in greenhouses, where they can multiply very quickly. They may look harmless because they are so small, but a large infestation can badly damage crops and ornamental plants. You might notice them when a little white cloud rises after you disturb an infested plant.
