The whinchat (Saxicola rubetra) is a small passerine bird belonging to the Old World flycatcher family. Its name perfectly captures its behavior and sound: "whin" is an old name for gorse bushes, its favorite perching spot, and "chat" refers to its restless, scolding call. The male's song is a bright, ringing melody consisting of varied whistles and chirps—often sounding like "whin-chit," repeated over and over to establish territory and attract mates during the breeding season.

Whinchats are compact birds, roughly the size of a sparrow, with a very distinctive appearance. Males are particularly handsome, boasting a bold white stripe above the eye (a supercilium), a dark mask on the face, and a warm orange-buff throat and breast that contrasts with a streaky brown back. Females and juveniles are more subtly colored, with more muted tones and a less prominent eye stripe, providing excellent camouflage against the dry grasses of their nesting sites.

These birds are impressive travelers, undertaking long migratory journeys between their northern breeding grounds and their wintering areas in sub-Saharan Africa. They prefer open habitats like meadows, heathland, moorland, and scrubby fields—places where they can perch on gorse bushes or fence posts to scan for insects, which make up the bulk of their diet.

Sadly, whinchat populations have seen a decline in some parts of Europe due to habitat loss and changes in intensive agricultural practices.
