A whaleboat is a long, narrow, open boat that was used mainly in whaling. Large whaling ships carried these boats and sent them out with a small crew when a whale was sighted. The boat needed to be light enough to launch quickly, strong enough for rough water, and fast enough to close in on a whale. It was usually rowed, though some also carried a sail.

In ordinary use, the word points to the small hunting boat itself, not to the larger ship. Because of that, it often appears in stories about the sea, accounts of nineteenth-century whaling, and discussions of maritime history. The image it carries is clear: a few people in a small open boat, far from the ship, doing dangerous work in open water.

By extension, the term can sometimes be used for a similar boat design on naval or merchant ships, especially in older writing. Still, its main meaning stays tied to the historical whale hunt. Today, most people meet the word in books such as Moby-Dick, museum material, or writing about the history of life at sea.
