welfarist

The term "welfarist" describes a person, policy, or point of view that puts welfare or well-being at the center. In the broadest sense, it suggests that the right system or decision is the one that best improves lives, protects basic needs, or reduces suffering. Because of that, the word appears both in political writing and in ethics.

In everyday political language, a welfarist often supports a strong welfare state or at least some public duty to protect people from severe hardship. That can include support for healthcare, education, pensions, unemployment aid, disability support, affordable housing, and similar public programs. In this sense, the word may be used neutrally, positively, or critically, depending on the speaker. A supporter may use it to mean compassionate and practical; a critic may use it to suggest too much dependence on the state.

In philosophy, the meaning is wider and more technical. A welfarist view judges actions, rules, or institutions mainly by how they affect welfare. Here, "welfare" usually means well-being, flourishing, happiness, interests, or some other account of what makes life go better. In animal ethics, for example, a welfarist may support reforms that reduce animal suffering and improve living conditions, even if they do not call for ending all human use of animals.

So the word does not point to just one narrow political label. It usually signals a deeper idea: welfare matters most, and social or moral choices should be judged largely by their effect on the well-being of people, and sometimes animals too.
