The earliest weblogs, which appeared in the mid-1990s, were often simple collections of links that people found interesting, essentially lists of resources. However, they quickly expanded to include personal stories, opinions on current events, tutorials, reviews, and much more.

A key characteristic of a weblog is its interactive nature. Unlike traditional websites, which are often static, blogs typically allow readers to leave comments and engage in discussions with the author and other readers. This fosters a sense of community around shared interests.

The term "weblog" itself is a blend of "web," referring to the World Wide Web, and "log," a word for a record of events, such as a ship's log. The shortened form, "blog," became more popular in the early 2000s.

Today, weblogs come in many forms, from personal diaries to professional publications. Companies use blogs to share industry knowledge, build brand awareness, and connect with customers. Individuals use them to express creativity, document their lives, or support causes they care about. While social media platforms offer similar uses, weblogs often provide more space for detailed writing and careful discussion of topics, which makes them a valuable part of the online world.
