Imagine a calm or stormy day at sea when, suddenly, a dark, twisting column appears between the water and the sky. That is likely a waterspout, a striking and sometimes dangerous weather event. It is a spinning column of air that forms over water and lifts spray into the air, giving it the dramatic shape people notice from far away.

There are two main types. Tornadic ones grow from severe thunderstorms and are closely related to tornadoes on land. Fair-weather ones usually form in lighter weather under growing clouds and are often weaker, though they can still be impressive and risky. Sailors once feared them as "sea monsters" that could swallow ships. That part belongs more to legend than to science, but even smaller ones can still threaten small boats because of sudden wind, rough water, and poor visibility. They are often seen in warm regions such as the Florida Keys, the Mediterranean, and parts of Japan.

Beyond the weather, "waterspout" can also mean a pipe that carries rainwater down from a roof, a sense that overlaps with what many people call a downspout. This is the meaning remembered in the nursery rhyme about the "itsy bitsy spider." In older or more literary writing, the word may also suggest a sudden rush or outpouring of something. Whether it appears in a children's song or out at sea, the word carries the image of water moving with force and motion.
