washcloth

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ˈwɒʃ.klɒθ/noun

US

  • /ˈwɑʃˌklɔθ/

Description

Imagine standing in the shower or leaning over a sink, ready to wash your face or body. The small cloth in your hand is often a washcloth. It is a soft, usually square piece of fabric, often made of cotton, used with water and sometimes soap to clean the skin. It can help remove dirt, wipe the face, and gently rub the skin in a way your hands alone cannot.

It is mostly used for bathing and washing, but it can also be used to wipe a baby's face or as a warm or cool cloth on the skin. In some places, people call it a "facecloth."
