The word virago has a long and striking history that reaches back to Latin. It comes from virago, a word related to vir, meaning "man," and it was first used for a woman thought to have great courage, strength, and heroic spirit. In that older sense, it was not an insult at all. It was praise. A fierce leader or warrior queen could be described this way because she seemed unusually bold and powerful.

Over the centuries, however, the meaning shifted. As ideas about proper female behavior became narrower, virago started to be used against women who seemed too assertive, too loud, too commanding, or too unwilling to stay within expected social roles. What had once suggested admirable strength began to suggest a woman who was difficult, overbearing, or unfeminine.

Today, calling someone a virago usually suggests that she is strong-willed and perhaps unpleasantly domineering. In many modern contexts, the word sounds old-fashioned and insulting, close to words like "shrew" or "termagant." Still, in historical writing, literary criticism, or older-style storytelling, it can sometimes keep some of its earlier force and admiration.
