Viewdata refers to an early interactive information system developed in the 1970s and used widely in the 1980s. It let people access information stored on a central computer through a telephone line, often by using a modified television set or a dedicated terminal. Unlike ordinary broadcast television, viewdata was interactive; users could ask for specific pages of information by entering codes on a keypad or keyboard.
The system showed information on a screen, often as text and simple graphics. It was not like browsing the modern internet. Instead, it gave access to selected databases managed by service providers. These services included electronic phone books, travel booking, news updates, shopping catalogs, and sometimes basic banking.
Different countries developed their own versions of viewdata. The UK's system was called Prestel, Canada had Telidon, and other countries built similar services. Although it was innovative for its time, viewdata was later overtaken by personal computers, the internet, and better graphical interfaces. Even so, it remains an important step in the history of online information services. It showed that people wanted to connect to useful information from home, and it helped point the way toward later digital systems.
