Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral that expands dramatically when heated—a process called exfoliation. This creates a lightweight, absorbent material with excellent insulating properties. The name comes from the Latin word vermiculus, meaning "little worm," referencing the way the mineral curls into long, worm-like strands as it expands.

Vermiculite became popular in the 20th century for uses such as insulation, fire-resistant products, and lightweight filler. Some older insulation made from it was contaminated with asbestos from a particular mine source, which led to serious health concerns. Because of that history, old loose-fill insulation should be handled carefully and checked by professionals when needed. Modern horticultural vermiculite is generally sold for safe everyday use.

Gardeners prize vermiculite because it improves soil aeration, retains moisture, and provides essential minerals. It's often mixed with potting soil or used as a seed-starting medium. Beyond gardening and construction, vermiculite finds applications in protective packaging, fireproofing, and even as a carrier for animal feed or friction materials in brake pads.

While some deposits are more environmentally friendly than others (as mining can disrupt local ecosystems), responsible sourcing is becoming increasingly important.
