A ventriloquist is a performer who creates the illusion that a voice comes from somewhere other than them, typically a puppet or "dummy." This is not magic; it is a highly developed skill involving careful control of the voice and breath, combined with clever misdirection and the ability to speak with very little lip movement. The goal is to make the audience feel that the figure is a living, speaking character.

Historically, ventriloquism was often viewed as something bordering on the supernatural. In some ancient cultures, it was associated with prophecy or even witchcraft, as people believed ventriloquists were possessed by spirits or "gastromancers" who spoke through them. Thankfully, by the 18th century, it moved into the realm of secular entertainment and became a staple of vaudeville and variety shows.

Modern ventriloquism is primarily entertainment-based, blending comedy with technical mastery. Famous performers like Paul Winchell (the voice of Tigger) and Shari Lewis (with the iconic Lamb Chop) brought the art to television screens for generations. Contemporary artists continue to push boundaries by using sophisticated animatronics or unconventional objects to keep the tradition alive.

The term "ventriloquist" can also be used metaphorically. If someone is described as a "ventriloquist" in a political or social sense, it suggests they are putting words into another person's mouth or using someone else as a mouthpiece to deliver their own agenda. In this context, the "dummy" is a person being manipulated to speak for another. Thus, while the art form involves throwing voices at wooden figures, the word can also describe a more subtle and calculated kind of human manipulation.
