Description

Imagine your body as a carefully balanced system that needs just the right amount of water to work well. That's where vasopressin comes in. This hormone is made in the brain and released into the blood to tell your kidneys to hold on to water, so you do not lose too much when you urinate. It works with your body's thirst signals to help keep you hydrated. You can think of it as part of your body's internal water-control system.

You usually do not notice it unless there is a medical problem. Doctors may talk about low levels or weak action of this hormone when a person has extreme thirst and urinates very often, as in diabetes insipidus. It also helps control blood pressure by narrowing blood vessels, which is where the "vaso-" (vessel) and "-pressin" (pressure) parts of its name come from.
