valvotomy

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /vælvˈɒtəmɪ/

US

  • /vælvˈɑːtəmi/

Description

Imagine a garden hose kinked partly shut. That is a bit like what happens when a heart valve becomes too narrow, a problem called stenosis. A valvotomy is a procedure in which a doctor cuts the narrowed valve to widen the opening, so blood can move through more easily. In simple terms, it is a way to open a stiff or tight valve without replacing it. It is less common now because balloon procedures and valve replacement are often used instead, but it is still an important treatment in some cases.
