The term is closely linked to the verb "to value," which means to estimate the worth of something. However, when someone is a valuer, it usually suggests a professional role and a formal assessment. For example, a bank might employ a valuer to determine the collateral for a loan, or an insurance company might use one to assess a claim. In British and Commonwealth English, valuer is a standard term, especially in property and business contexts; in American English, appraiser is often more common.
