Imagine a strong, flexible organ resting deep in the pelvis. That is the uterus. It is best known as the place where a baby grows during pregnancy, but it is also an important part of the female reproductive system. The word comes from Latin and is related to the idea of the womb.

The uterus has several layers. The inner lining, called the endometrium, thickens during the menstrual cycle and sheds during menstruation if pregnancy does not happen. Common examples include fibroids, which are non-cancerous growths in or on the uterus, and endometriosis, a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside it. Heavy bleeding, pain, or irregular periods may also be linked to the uterus.
