Our bodies are amazing networks of pathways and organs working together, and the ureter plays a vital role in one of our most basic functions: removing waste. A person typically has two ureters, one connected to each kidney. Each ureter is a muscular tube, usually about 10 inches long, that carries urine.

The journey begins when your kidneys filter blood, creating urine as a waste product. This liquid waste then travels down the ureter through rhythmic contractions, called peristalsis. You can imagine it a bit like toothpaste being pushed through a tube. In the end, the urine empties into the bladder, where it is stored until it leaves the body.

Problems with a ureter can happen, often because of a blockage such as a kidney stone or because of a condition present at birth. These problems can cause pain, infection, and even damage to the kidneys if they are not treated. Doctors may use imaging tests such as X-rays, ultrasound, or CT scans to look at the ureters and find the cause.

So, while you might not think about it often, a ureter is an important part of your body's waste removal system, quietly helping everything flow smoothly. It is a key part of the urinary tract, carrying urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
