More importantly, certain pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria, like Helicobacter pylori, which can cause stomach ulcers, rely heavily on urease. These bacteria live in acidic environments like the stomach, and they use urease to help neutralize the acid around them, allowing them to survive and cause infection. This is why doctors can test for urease activity, often through a breath test, to diagnose H. pylori infections: detecting the enzyme's activity strongly suggests the bacteria are present.
