unrestrained

B2
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ˌʌnrɪstrˈeɪnd/

US

  • /ˌənriˈstreɪnd/

Description

Something unrestrained is not held back by rules, limits, or self-control. Picture a child with a brand-new box of crayons, happily covering the page with color and ideas. The word can also describe strong feelings, as when grief comes out in loud crying and open emotion. It often fits anything that seems free and hard to control, like wild horses running across open land.

It is the opposite of restrained, which suggests careful control. A calm conversation may stay restrained, but a heated argument can turn unrestrained very quickly. You can also use it for behavior, spending, laughter, anger, or excitement when there is little effort to hold anything back.
