unrequited

C2
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ˌʌnrɪkwˈaɪtɪd/

US

  • /ˌənriˈkwaɪtɪd/

Description

Imagine building a beautiful sandcastle on the beach, carefully shaping each tower and wall, only for the tide to wash it away. That feeling of giving something and not getting the same feeling back is often what "unrequited" describes. It most often refers to love or affection that is not returned. A crush who does not feel the same way? That is unrequited love. It can also describe other feelings or care that go unanswered. The key idea is simple: it is one-sided.
