A uniprocessor is a computer system with only one central processing unit (CPU). The CPU, often called the "brain" of the computer, executes instructions and performs calculations. In this kind of system, all main computing tasks, such as running programs, managing files, and handling input and output, are handled by that single CPU.

Historically, uniprocessors were the norm in computing. Early personal computers, including the original IBM PC, used this design. Today, many machines use multiple cores inside one chip (multicore processors) or even multiple physical processors (multiprocessor systems). Understanding the uniprocessor helps explain how these newer designs developed.

The term "uniprocessor" is less common now because most consumer computers have moved beyond this architecture. However, it is still relevant when discussing embedded systems, such as those in household appliances or simple control devices, where one processor can provide enough computing power at a lower cost and with less complexity.

Think of it like a one-lane highway. All the traffic has to share the same lane, so there is less room to do many things at once than on a multi-lane road. In the same way, a uniprocessor handles the system's work through one CPU, while multiprocessor systems can spread work across more than one processing unit. Though simpler than many modern designs, the uniprocessor laid the groundwork for the computing power we use today.
