Imagine someone goes to great lengths to help you, maybe even sacrificing their own time or resources. If you then dismiss their kindness without a thank you, or worse, complain about what they did, that's being ungrateful. It's the opposite of showing appreciation for something good someone has done for you. An ungrateful person doesn't acknowledge the generosity of others and may even feel entitled to it. Think of a guest who is served a beautiful, home-cooked meal but spends the evening complaining that the portions are too small—that is a classic example of being ungrateful for the host's effort and hospitality.

To be ungrateful is to lack appreciation for kindness received. It is more than just forgetting to say "thank you"; it implies a sense of entitlement or a failure to recognize the effort and generosity of another person. The word carries a strong negative connotation, suggesting a significant flaw in character.

You might describe someone as "ungrateful" if they constantly complain despite receiving significant help, or if they take kindness for granted and expect more without acknowledging what they have already been given. It can also be applied to broader, collective situations—an ungrateful nation failing to remember its fallen heroes, or a community ignoring the tireless contributions of its volunteers.
