underside

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ˌʌndəsˈaɪd/

US

  • /ˈəndərˌsaɪd/

Description

Imagine flipping a table over. The underside is the part you usually do not see: the bottom surface. It faces downward and is often hidden from view. But "underside" is not just about physical objects. You might talk about the underside of a situation: the hidden reasons behind it. Or the underside of life: the difficult or unpleasant parts.

Think of a leaf: you see the top, green and bright, but the underside is often paler and has tiny veins. A table, a chair, or a shelf also has an underside that is easy to miss unless you turn it over. And sometimes, when things go wrong, we need to examine the underside of a situation to understand what is really happening.
