Undernourishment is a state in which a person does not get enough energy from food, and often not enough essential nutrients, to support growth, health, and normal daily life. It goes beyond a brief spell of hunger. Instead, it describes a longer-lasting shortage that can slowly weaken the body and, in serious cases, lead to major health problems.

Historically, undernourishment has often been linked to famine, war, natural disasters, and extreme poverty. In the modern world, it is still closely tied to poverty, food insecurity, poor sanitation, limited healthcare, and conditions that make it hard for the body to absorb nutrients. It especially affects vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with serious illnesses. In children, it can slow physical growth and learning. In adults, it can reduce strength, energy, and resistance to disease.

The term is often used in discussions about public health, food security, and humanitarian crises. Governments and aid organizations track undernourishment to understand where people are not getting enough food for a healthy life. Even in wealthy countries, some people can become undernourished because of homelessness, isolation, low income, illness, or other barriers to regular meals. In the end, undernourishment is not just about feeling weak or hungry. It can harm the immune system, raise the risk of disease, delay recovery, and make everyday life much harder. It is a serious condition at both the personal and social level.
