unclench

C2

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ʌnklˈɛntʃ/

US

  • /ʌnklˈɛntʃ/

Description

Imagine holding a fist tightly for a long time. Your hand gets tired, doesn't it? To unclench means to relax that tight hold and let the tension go. It is not just about hands, though. You can unclench your jaw when you are stressed, or unclench your shoulders when you finally start to relax.

Think of someone after a hard race, finally able to unclench their muscles at the finish line. Or picture a person slowly unclenching their jaw after hearing good news. The word suggests a move away from tightness, usually in the body, and sometimes in feelings too. Sometimes it takes a clear effort, and sometimes it happens on its own when relief sets in.
