unbolt

B2
verb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ʌnbˈəʊlt/

US

  • /ˈənˌboʊlt/

Description

Imagine a heavy door or gate held shut by a metal bar. To unbolt it is to slide that bar back so the door can open. The word is also used for machines, furniture, or other solid things that are fixed in place with bolts. If you unbolt a seat, a wheel, or a metal panel, you loosen and remove the bolts so the part comes free.

Think of a worker unbolting a bench from the floor before moving it, or a mechanic unbolting a cover to reach the engine inside. The action is physical and deliberate. The opposite is bolt, which means to fasten something with a bolt.
