Imagine trying to "see" inside the human body without cutting it open. That's where this method comes in. It is a non-invasive medical test, a bit like sonar, that uses high-frequency sound waves to make real-time images of organs, soft tissues, and developing babies. Many people know it best as the scan used during pregnancy to check on a baby.
But it is not only for pregnancy. Doctors also use it to look at the heart, the abdomen, blood flow, and other parts of the body. It helps them find problems and guide some procedures without surgery or radiation.
Ultrasonography, often simply called ultrasound, is a medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create dynamic visual images of structures within the body. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasonography doesn't use ionizing radiation, making it generally considered safe for repeated use and especially valuable during pregnancy.
The process involves a device called a transducer, a handheld probe that emits these sound waves. As the waves travel through the body, they bounce off different tissues and organs. The transducer then picks up these echoes, and a computer turns them into an image on a screen. Different tissues reflect sound waves in different ways, creating shades of gray that help doctors tell one structure from another.
Ultrasonography has a wide range of applications in modern medicine. It's commonly used for:
