Ubiquinone, more commonly known as Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), is a naturally occurring compound found in nearly all human cells. Its name hints at its importance: "ubiqui-" means "everywhere," reflecting its widespread presence throughout the body, and "quinone" refers to its chemical structure. But what does it do?

At its core, ubiquinone plays a crucial role in mitochondrial energy production, helping cells convert food into usable energy (ATP). Think of mitochondria as tiny engines within each cell; CoQ10 helps those engines do their job. Without enough of it, cells may not produce energy as efficiently.

Beyond energy production, ubiquinone is also an antioxidant. Antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules linked to aging and disease. By helping control this damage, CoQ10 supports normal cell health and function.

The body does produce its own CoQ10, but production can decline with age and may also be affected by some medical conditions or medicines, including statins. For that reason, it is often sold as a dietary supplement. Doctors may sometimes suggest it in discussions about heart health, migraine prevention, or low CoQ10 levels related to certain treatments.

Interestingly, ubiquinone exists in two forms: ubiquinone itself (the oxidized form) and ubiquinol (the reduced, active antioxidant form). The body can convert between the two, but some supplements prioritize ubiquinol for potentially better absorption.

So, while it may sound like a complex scientific term, ubiquinone is basically about helping cells make energy and protecting them from damage. It is a small but important part of how the body keeps itself running.
