tuner

A2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /tjˈuːnə/

US

  • /ˈtunər/

Description

A "tuner" is either a person or a device that helps something work or sound right. Imagine a mechanic carefully tuning a car engine so it runs smoothly, or a musician using a clip-on device to find the exact pitch for a guitar string before a performance.

The word is also common in electronics. A radio tuner lets you move through many frequencies and lock onto one station. Whether it is a piano tuner using trained ears to adjust an instrument or an electronic part selecting a signal, the job is the same: moving something from slightly off to exactly right.
