Tuff is a type of igneous rock made mainly from volcanic ash, often mixed with small rock fragments or pumice. Unlike rocks that form when molten lava cools into a solid mass, this one usually comes from explosive eruptions that send ash and broken material into the air. Over time, that material falls back to the ground, builds up in layers, and becomes pressed and cemented together into stone. The result is often a fairly soft, porous rock.

The color can vary widely depending on the volcanic material it came from. It may be white, cream, gray, pink, brown, or black. Because it is often light and easy to shape, it has been used as a building stone in many places. The ancient Romans famously used tufo (the Italian name for this rock) in walls, buildings, and other structures.

Today, it is still used in some kinds of construction, especially as decorative stone or in landscaping. It also forms striking cliffs and rock shapes in volcanic regions around the world. When you see a pale, easy-to-carve rock in such a place, you may be looking at the remains of ancient volcanic ash, pressed into stone over time.
