The word "tubal" comes from "tube." Although it can technically describe anything that is related to a tube or has a tube-like form, in real use it is most often connected with anatomy, especially the fallopian tubes. These are important parts of the female reproductive system, serving as passageways through which eggs travel from the ovaries toward the uterus.

You'll most commonly encounter "tubal" in medical contexts. A "tubal ligation" (often called getting your "tubes tied") is a permanent form of birth control in which these tubes are blocked, cut, or sealed. A "tubal pregnancy," which is a type of ectopic pregnancy, occurs when a fertilized egg implants in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus. This is a dangerous condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Less frequently, "tubal" may be used in broader anatomical descriptions for other tube-like structures in the body, such as the Eustachian tube in the ear. However, in modern everyday English, the term is strongly associated with the fallopian tubes and reproductive health. In most cases, if you see or hear "tubal," it is being used in a medical sense rather than as a general word for something tube-shaped.
