That is a classic example of a trophic cascade.
Scientists also use "trophic" when discussing the trophic state of aquatic ecosystems, referring to the amount of biological productivity. A *eutrophic lake is rich in nutrients and supports abundant plant life, while an oligotrophic* lake is clear and nutrient-poor.
Outside ecology, "trophic" can describe the nourishment or maintenance of body tissues. You may see phrases such as trophic nerves, trophic effects, or trophic ulcers, where the idea is that normal nutrition, support, or growth of tissue has been affected. In these cases, the word is not about a food chain but about how living tissue is sustained.
So, while you probably will not describe your lunch as "trophic," the word is useful once you enter scientific writing. Whether it is talking about energy flow in a forest or the nourishment of body tissue, it points back to the same core idea: feeding, support, and growth.
