The word transection comes from roots that mean "to cut across." In English, it usually refers to a complete cut through a structure, especially in medical or anatomical writing. It is stronger and more exact than a general word like "cut" because it suggests that the structure has been fully severed across its width.

You will most often meet transection in discussions of nerves, blood vessels, the spinal cord, or other tissues. A doctor might describe a traumatic transection after a serious injury, or a surgeon might intentionally perform one during a procedure. In these settings, the word can refer to the act of cutting through the structure or to the condition of having been cut through.

The term is sometimes extended to other technical fields when something is cut cleanly across, but that is much less common than the medical use. In everyday English, people rarely use transection for ordinary objects like bread, fruit, or wood; they would normally say "slice," "cut," or "cross-section." So if you see transection, the safest interpretation is a complete severing across a body part, tissue, or another technical structure.
