Think of it this way: if a building suffers structural damage, debris will leak out into the surrounding area. Similarly, when liver cells are harmed, transaminases "leak" into the blood. The higher the level of these enzymes, the more likely there is significant liver injury. However, elevated levels don't always mean serious liver disease; they can also be caused by intense exercise, muscle damage, or certain medications.
Doctors use transaminase tests as part of a broader evaluation to diagnose and monitor liver conditions. They often combine these results with other blood tests, imaging scans, and clinical assessments to get a complete picture of liver health. So while the word "transaminase" might sound complex, it names an important kind of enzyme and also points to a useful clue about what may be happening inside the body.
