Traction describes the friction between two surfaces that allows one to move or maintain control over the other. Most commonly, we think of it in physical terms—the grip tires have on a road surface, shoes on a floor, or boots on a hiking trail. Without sufficient traction, movement becomes difficult and potentially dangerous. The phrase "the snow made it hard to get any traction" describes slippery conditions where vehicles struggle to move forward.
