Imagine the roar of the crowd, the flash of cameras, and players sprinting across a green expanse. The touchline is the white or brightly colored line marking the long side of a sports field, most often in rugby and football (soccer). It is where the action often spills over, where players try to keep the ball in play, and where coaches pace nervously.

Think of it as the boundary between the playing area and the space beyond it. When the ball crosses the touchline, play goes out of bounds and is restarted in a way that depends on the sport. You might hear commentators say, "He's gone into touch!" meaning the ball has gone out along that side line. It is not just a physical marker; it shows the limit of play.

The touchline is a specific term used mainly in sports, especially rugby and association football (soccer), to name the long boundary lines along the sides of the playing field. Unlike the goal lines at each end, the touchlines run the length of the pitch and show where play stays in bounds.

When the ball fully crosses the touchline, it is out of play, and the game restarts according to the rules of that sport, such as with a throw-in in football or a lineout in rugby. In everyday sports writing and commentary, the word can also point more loosely to the area beside the field, especially where coaches, substitutes, and staff stand.

While it is most strongly linked with these sports, you may also hear touchline used in a wider or slightly figurative way to mean the edge of the action or the place from which someone watches and reacts. Even so, its main meaning stays rooted in sport: a key line that marks the side of the field and helps define where the game happens and where it stops. You can picture a tense moment: "The winger sprinted down the touchline, desperately trying to keep the ball in play," or "The coach was pacing anxiously along the touchline."
