In medical or skincare settings, it can also mean that something is put directly on the skin, like a cream or gel.

The word "topically" has two main uses, and the context usually makes the meaning clear. The first, and often the more general one, is about subject matter. If something is discussed, arranged, or studied topically, it is handled by topic rather than by time or by some other order. A historian might study a period topically by looking at trade, religion, or daily life as separate subjects instead of moving year by year through events. In the same way, a writer or speaker may move topically from one issue to another, keeping the focus on themes and related ideas.

The second meaning of "topically" appears often in medicine and skincare. Here, it means that something is applied directly to a part of the body, usually the skin. A cream for a rash is used topically, and so is an ointment or medicated gel. The idea is local treatment: you put the substance on the affected area itself instead of taking something by mouth or receiving treatment through the whole body.

To tell which meaning is intended, look at the setting. If the discussion is about ideas, chapters, lessons, or lines of research, the word usually means "by subject" or "in relation to a topic." If it appears in a medical, pharmacy, or skincare context, it usually means "applied to the skin" or to another body surface. So whether you are organizing research notes or treating a sunburn, topically points to something direct and focused: either a specific subject or a specific place on the body.
