Tonsillitis isn't just a regular sore throat; it is specifically an inflammation of the tonsils—those two oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of your throat that act as a first line of defense against infection. Think of them as little security guards trying to catch germs before they can make you sick. But sometimes, these guards get overwhelmed and become infected themselves!

There are different patterns of tonsillitis. Acute tonsillitis comes on quickly and usually lasts from a few days to about two weeks. It is often caused by common viruses, including the ones behind colds and the flu. Chronic tonsillitis is longer-lasting or keeps coming back, with repeated sore throats and ongoing inflammation. In some cases, the cause is bacterial, including the same bacteria that cause strep throat. When that happens, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics to help prevent complications.

Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe pain, making it difficult to eat or drink. You might experience a scratchy sensation, swollen tonsils (often with white or yellow spots), fever, headache, earache, and even a stiff neck.

Historically, doctors frequently removed tonsils (a procedure called a tonsillectomy) for chronic or severe cases. While still performed today, it is less common now because antibiotics are highly effective in treating bacterial infections.
