tokamak

A tokamak is a device that uses powerful magnetic fields to confine plasma in an effort to achieve controlled nuclear fusion - essentially recreating, in a limited way, the process that powers the sun here on Earth. It is shaped like a donut, or torus, with complex arrangements of magnets surrounding it. These magnets create spiraling magnetic fields that prevent the superheated plasma from touching the walls of the chamber; any contact would rapidly cool the plasma and disrupt the fusion process.

The core principle behind tokamaks is magnetic confinement. Fusion requires extreme temperatures, often many millions of degrees Celsius. At these temperatures, matter exists as plasma, an ionized gas in which electrons are stripped from atoms. Plasma naturally wants to expand, but the magnetic fields in a tokamak keep it contained, allowing scientists to study and guide the fusion reactions as they happen.

The term "tokamak" originates from the Russian acronym тороидальная камера с магнитными катушками ("toroidal chamber with magnetic coils"). The concept was developed in the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s by physicists including Igor Tamm and Andrei Sakharov, and it quickly became one of the leading designs for fusion research around the world.

Today, tokamaks are at the forefront of international energy research. Projects like ITER in France represent massive collaborative efforts to build larger, more powerful machines that can sustain fusion conditions for longer periods and test whether fusion power can become a practical, low-carbon energy source. While still experimental, tokamaks hold great promise for the future of energy - they are, in a sense, attempts to bottle a little bit of sunshine.
