This gives the gas a strong warning smell, often described as skunky or sulfur-like. Skunks also famously use thiols as part of their defensive spray.
However, thiols aren't just about bad smells; they are vital in biochemistry. The amino acid cysteine contains a thiol group and is crucial for maintaining protein structure and function through the formation of "disulfide bridges." Thiols also play key roles in antioxidant processes within the body, helping to protect cells from damage.
In chemistry, thiols are versatile building blocks used to create more complex molecules, including pharmaceuticals and specialized polymers. Researchers are even exploring their use in nanotechnology to create self-assembling monolayers. So, while they might be known for their smell, thiols are essential players in both the natural world and scientific innovation.
