noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /θɜːmˈɒmɪtə/

US

  • /θərˈmɑmətər/

Description

A thermometer is a tool that measures how hot or cold something is. People often think of it as something used to check for a fever, but it is also used in cooking, science, weather reports, and many other everyday situations. Some older kinds use mercury or alcohol in a glass tube, while many modern ones are digital.

You might use one to check body temperature, see if bathwater is safe, or make sure food is cooked properly. It gives a clear reading in Celsius, Fahrenheit, or sometimes Kelvin. In simple terms, it helps us know temperature instead of guessing.
