Tenascin is the name of a family of glycoproteins, which are proteins with sugar molecules attached. These proteins are part of the extracellular matrix, the material outside cells that helps hold tissues together and send signals. Members of this family include Tenascin-C, Tenascin-R, Tenascin-X, and Tenascin-W. In general, they influence how cells attach, move, grow, and organize themselves within tissues.
