Telomeres are repeating stretches of DNA, along with related proteins, found at the ends of chromosomes. They are often compared to the plastic aglets on shoelaces because they help keep chromosome ends from wearing down or sticking to other chromosomes. Think of a chromosome as an important document; these end sections act like protective covers that help it stay intact during copying and normal cell activity.

Each time a cell divides, a small part of the telomere is usually lost. At first, this is not a major problem, but after many divisions, and often with age, telomeres can become critically short. When that happens, the cell may stop dividing, enter a state called senescence, or die. This process is linked to aging and has been associated with a higher risk of some diseases, including cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer.

Interestingly, some cells, such as stem cells and many cancer cells, use an enzyme called telomerase to rebuild telomeres. This helps them keep dividing for longer than ordinary cells. Scientists are actively studying telomere length and telomerase activity to better understand aging, cancer, and possible treatments for age-related illness.

The study of telomeres has greatly expanded our understanding of aging, genetics, and disease. So, while invisible to the naked eye, these tiny structures offer important clues about how our cells live, age, and stay healthy.
