The word "teller" has two main lives in English, and one of them is far more common in everyday use. Today, most people mean a bank teller: the employee behind the counter who helps with deposits, withdrawals, payments, and other routine transactions. This is the standard modern meaning. For example: "She asked the teller to cash her check."

The older sense comes from the verb "tell," which once had a stronger connection both to counting and to relating facts or stories. In that older or more literary use, a teller is a person who tells something: a teller of tales, a teller of truths, or someone who reports events. You may still see this sense in phrases such as "a teller of stories," but it is not the usual modern standalone meaning.

The word also has a special formal meaning in elections and public meetings. In that context, a teller is a person appointed to count votes. This use is still current in some political, parliamentary, and organizational settings. So depending on the context, a teller may handle money at a bank, count votes in a formal process, or, in older and literary language, be someone who tells stories or reports events.
