Telework is a way of working in which a person does their job away from the usual office, normally by using digital tools to stay connected. Home is the most common place for it, but the idea is broader than that. Someone might work from a co-working space, a local library, a quiet cafe, or another location outside the main workplace. The key point is not the exact place, but the fact that the work is being done at a distance from the central office.

In everyday use, the word often overlaps with remote work and telecommuting. People may use these terms almost as if they mean the same thing. Still, telework often appears in formal writing, company policies, government documents, and workplace discussions. You may see it used as a noun ("Telework is allowed twice a week") or as a verb ("She teleworks on Fridays").

There are several common patterns. Some people telework full-time and rarely visit an office. Others follow a hybrid schedule, spending part of the week at home and part in person. In some jobs, telework is only occasional, such as during bad weather, while traveling, or when focused work is easier outside the office.

The word also carries ideas about flexibility, technology, and changing work habits. Conversations about it often include topics such as work-life balance, commuting time, team communication, productivity, and company rules. In short, telework describes doing your job from a distance rather than from the usual office, usually with technology making that possible.
