The telencephalon is the front and largest major part of the forebrain in vertebrates. In humans, it makes up most of the cerebrum and supports higher mental functions such as reasoning, learning, memory, language, emotion, and voluntary movement. You can think of it as a major control center for the abilities that shape personality, behavior, and conscious experience.
The telencephalon is divided into two cerebral hemispheres, the left and right sides of the brain, which are connected by a large bundle of nerve fibers called the corpus callosum. These hemispheres work together, although each side is linked more strongly to certain tasks and to the opposite side of the body. The telencephalon includes the cerebral cortex, which is the highly folded outer layer, as well as important deeper structures. Those parts help with planning, sensory understanding, memory, emotion, and the start of voluntary actions.
The term "telencephalon" comes from Greek roots: tele meaning "end" or "distant," and enkephalos meaning "brain." So it literally translates to the "end-brain," referring to its position at the very front of the central nervous system.
While all vertebrates have a telencephalon, its size and complexity vary greatly across species. In humans, it is especially large and developed, which supports abstract reasoning, complex language, and rich social behavior. In neuroscience and developmental biology, the term often appears in discussions of brain development, evolution, and disorders that affect the cerebrum, including conditions such as Alzheimer's disease.
