The teepee is a conical tent historically used by nomadic Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains region of North America. Constructed from animal hides stretched over a framework of wooden poles, teepees were designed to be easily disassembled and transported, allowing families to follow migrating bison herds—their primary source of food, clothing, and shelter.

The construction itself is a feat of engineering: typically made with 12 to 25 poles arranged in a circular pattern, leaning inward and tied together near the top, leaving an opening for smoke from a central fire. A smoke flap at the apex could be adjusted to control ventilation and keep the interior dry. The hides were often decorated with intricate paintings depicting personal stories, clan affiliations, or spiritual beliefs, making each teepee a unique and meaningful work of art.

While historically essential for survival, teepees continue to hold immense cultural significance today. They are erected for ceremonies like powwows, representing a vital link to ancestral traditions. Some Indigenous individuals still choose to use teepees for specific gatherings or educational purposes, embracing their heritage and sustainable design.
