The word "synthase" refers to a class of enzymes that catalyze the joining of two or more molecules to form a larger, more complex one. In biology, enzymes are usually proteins that speed up chemical reactions, and synthases are the ones associated with synthesis—the making of something new from smaller parts.

In stricter biochemical use, a synthase is often distinguished from a synthetase: a synthetase is a ligase that uses energy from ATP or a similar molecule directly, while a synthase usually does not fall into that class. In everyday learning materials, though, the main idea is that a synthase helps cells assemble important molecules. These enzymes are crucial in many biological processes, including:
